I have always hated the New Year starting in January; it doesn’t work for me. It’s too cold. Nothing feels new or fresh. Associating that time of year with the “start” of anything feels all wrong to me.
It wasn’t until I was older that I found out that other cultures and religious traditions start their new years at different times. It was a relief to know that maybe my defiance toward January 1st was not just me being a contrarian (which I am…).
For me, the year starts with the spring equinox. It’s possible this is because I’m a Pisces. I came into the world just under a month before the first day of spring, and for me, this time of year feels like the beginning.
I love knowing all the different holidays and many of the special secular days. So, as part of my spiritual journey, I’ve decided to compile a calendar using an interfaith calendar, the pagan Wheel of the Year, and the United Nations calendar of international days.
Now that it’s March, and my spiritual year is beginning, I have posted a list of special and holy days for the spring season. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it inspires you to create a spiritual calendar that speaks to your experience of the year!
